Cuomo turns back challenge from left in New York Democratic gubernatorial race

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday turned back a challenge from the left by actress and activist Cynthia Nixon in the state’s Democratic nominating contest, according to media projections.

The win makes Cuomo the heavy favorite headed into the Nov. 6 general election against Republican Marc Molinaro.

Cuomo, seeking a third term, spent about $18 million in his battle to fend off Nixon, best known for her role on HBO’s “Sex and the City.”

Despite a spirited campaign, Nixon had trailed in polls by more than 30 points throughout the race.
